Silence and Absence of DP Gachagua Ignite Debate Among Kenyans

The recent silence and absence of Kenya's Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from multiple state functions have sparked significant debate and speculation.

Gachagua, known for his vocal presence, last appeared publicly on Monday at Kagumo Market in Kirinyaga County. Since then, he has missed eleven state functions, including the welcoming of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and a tree planting exercise led by President William Ruto on May 10th in Bomet County.

Reports suggest that Gachagua's absence is due to directives from President Ruto, which reportedly surprised him. For instance, the Deputy President's office requested a Kenya Airforce helicopter for the Bomet visit, but the request was denied due to "orders from above." Attempts to secure other aircraft were also unsuccessful due to payment issues. Consequently, Gachagua canceled his plans to attend the Bomet event and subsequently missed several other significant functions, including a Statehouse meeting with KTDA officials, the Kenya Defense Forces passout parade, and the farewell for President Museveni, attended by Kipchumba Murkomen and Raila Odinga.

These developments have raised questions and concerns about the dynamics within the Kenya Kwanza administration and the relationship between President Ruto and his deputy.
